Revisiting what made William Penn and his colony

unique, enduring, and impactful this October will be visiting speaker Andrew Murphy on October 13, 2019. Murphy wrote the most important new biography on our subject, William Penn: A life (Oxford University Press). He will be speaking about Penn's inclusion of the Welsh in his invitation, and their diaspora to the American colonies. Also covered will Penn's interactions with the indigenous Lenape people.

Pennsylvania Heritage described Murphy's biography as a "... deeply researched and richly detailed volume, ...the fullest biographical study to date of Pennsylvania founder and first proprietor William Penn. The result is a book that brings us as close to revealing Penn on his terms as we likely will ever get."

The event is on Saturday October 13, 2019, at the Merion Meetinghouse at 1 pm.
A reception with birthday cake, book signing, and artifacts from the Lower Merion Historical Society will follow in the Activities building.

Map and parking are here.

Silent Vigils held to honor the lives of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and the countless known and unknown victims of injustice were organized by Laura Jackson and Melinda Yin. Members, attenders, and allies have been standing in front of the Meeting House from May 29 to June 13, from 30 to 60 minutes in groups of 2-16. The Sisters of Mercy and their friends, joined in the second week. Their spiritual mission encompasses a commitment to social justice, with 5 interdependent critical concerns. These are: non-violence, the earth, immigration, anti-racism, and the condition of women.
