Merion History Festival

Merion • May 12, 2017

Saturday May 21,2017  10 - 3 pm

Remember to join us Saturday, May 21, 2017 - 10 am – 3 pm, rain or shine, for the Merion Friends Meeting History Festival. Want to know about the Underground Railroad, the Abolition Movement, the early (mid-19th century) Women’s Rights Movement? We’ll have re-enactors presenting the views of significant Quakers of that time. Want to know more about how ordinary people lived in the 1840’s? We’ll have food, children’s toys/games/crafts, horse and carriage rides, a blacksmith, a silhouette cutter and more. Want to go deep into the history and artifacts? We’ll have poster exhibits, quilts, clothing, and pictures. Always wondered what a Quaker meetinghouse is like inside, or want to know where the bodies are buried? There will be tours of the meetinghouse and burying ground.

Silent Vigils held to honor the lives of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and the countless known and unknown victims of injustice were organized by Laura Jackson and Melinda Yin. Members, attenders, and allies have been standing in front of the Meeting House from May 29 to June 13, from 30 to 60 minutes in groups of 2-16. The Sisters of Mercy and their friends, joined in the second week. Their spiritual mission encompasses a commitment to social justice, with 5 interdependent critical concerns. These are: non-violence, the earth, immigration, anti-racism, and the condition of women.
