Mt. 6: 1-4
Be careful when you try to do good things that you aren't doing them in a way that everyone else notices. If you do good to impress other people, you won't impress God very much. When you give money to charity, don't announce it. If everyone says what a great person you are, you have already received your reward from other people. Then you won't get a reward from God.
When you give money to charity, be so quiet about it that your left hand doesn't know what your right hand is doing.
Then God, who sees what is secret, will reward you.
Mt. 6:19-21:
Don't try to be rich in material treasures. Anything you can buy with money can rot, or rust, or be stolen.
Be rich in the treasures of heaven. They can't be destroyed or stolen. And the kind of treasure you care enough to collect shows where your heart really is.
Mt. 6: 24-34
No one can really work for two bosses at the same time. They either hate one boss and love the other, or they admire the first boss and think the other is worthless.
You can't serve God and money.
That's why I say not to worry about buying things. Don't worry what you will eat or drink, or what clothes you need to buy, or where you will live. Isn't life about more than food and clothes?
Look at the birds. They don't have farms or go to the store, but God gives them food. Don't you think you're worth more to God than birds?
And is there a single person who ever lived longer by worrying?
And why are you worried about clothes? Look at the wildflowers. They don't work or make clothes, but even Solomon, the most famous and wealthy king in history, didn't have clothes that looked that beautiful.
But if God has such beautiful clothes for weeds in the field that are alive today and thrown in the trash tomorrow, don't you think he'll give you clothes?
So don't worry and go on about, “What are we going to eat?” or “What are we going to drink,” or “What are we going to wear?”
The people who don't even believe in God get those things, and God knows you need them, too.
But first, try to listen to God and do what you know is right, and you'll get all the other things you need, too.
And don't worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow can worry about itself. All you need to think about is today.
